Video to GIF Converter and Frame Extractor

Pick a video, set the start and end times, FPS and width, and get an animated GIF. You can also save the frame at any time as a PNG still. Everything runs in your browser, so the video is never uploaded. To convert or compress the video itself, use the Video & Audio Converter; to build a GIF from still images, use the GIF Maker.

🔒 Runs in your browser · Your data is never sent to a server

You can also drag and drop a file here

How to use

  1. Choose a video file (drag and drop also works).
  2. Enter the "Start" and "End" times of the part you want, then pick "FPS" and "Width".
  3. Press "Create GIF", check the preview, and save it with "Download GIF".
  4. For a still image, enter a "Time" under "Save a frame as PNG", press "Extract frame", and download the PNG.

Notes

  • A GIF frame can use at most 256 colors, so footage with gradients can look banded and the file can get large. Keeping the duration, FPS and width low makes it smaller.
  • The limit is 300 frames, and video files up to 1 GB. For long videos, set only the range you need.
  • GIFs have no sound; audio is not included.
  • Decoding uses your browser’s WebCodecs support, so readable formats vary by browser. The latest Chrome or Edge is recommended.
  • Keep this tab open and in the foreground while converting. Some browsers slow down or pause background tabs.
  • The PNG is saved at the video’s original resolution. The frame shown at (or just before) the time you enter is used.
  • All processing happens in your browser; the video you choose is never sent to a server.

Glossary

FPS (frame rate)

The number of frames shown per second. A higher value looks smoother but adds frames, so the GIF gets larger. 10–15 fps is common for GIFs.

Animated GIF

An image format that chains still images so they play like a short video. It has no sound and is limited to 256 colors per frame.

Frame

One still image of a video. A video is a sequence of many frames shown in quick succession.

WebCodecs

A standard browser API for compressing and decompressing video and audio. This tool uses it to read videos inside your browser.

FAQ

Is my video uploaded to a server?

No. Reading the video and building the GIF both happen in your browser, and the file you choose is never sent anywhere.

How can I make the GIF smaller?

Lower the width, lower the FPS, or shorten the range. A GIF stores every frame as an image, so its size grows with the number of frames and the picture size.

How long a clip can I turn into a GIF?

The limit is 300 frames, not a number of seconds: 30 seconds at 10 fps, or 15 seconds at 20 fps. A very wide GIF can also be rejected when its total data would be too large.

Can I save a single scene from the video as an image?

Enter a time (for example 1:30.5) under "Save a frame as PNG" and extract it. The frame at that time is saved as a PNG at the original resolution.

Why can’t the video be read, or why does conversion fail?

Decoding depends on your browser’s WebCodecs support, so some browsers or video codecs cannot be read. Try the latest Chrome or Edge. Running out of memory can also cause a failure.
