How to use
- Pick a sheet under “Type”, then choose the “Paper size” and “Orientation”.
- Adjust “Cell / line spacing (mm)”, “Margin (mm)”, “Line width (mm)” and “Line color”. The preview shows the result.
- Press “Print” to print just the sheet (or save it as a PDF), or use “Save as SVG” to download it as an image.
Notes
- In the print dialog, set the scale to 100% (actual size) and turn off fit to page or shrink to fit. Scaling changes the real cell size.
- Printers cannot print to the very edge of the paper, so a margin of 5 mm or more keeps the edges from being cut off.
- Only whole cells that fit inside the margins are drawn, centered on the page, so the real margins can be slightly larger than the value you set.
- The boxed manuscript type is a bordered grid; it is not an exact copy of a 20×20 Japanese genkō yōshi sheet.
Glossary
Dot grid
Paper with dots at the grid intersections instead of full lines. The pattern stays out of the way, which suits sketching, diagrams and free-form notes.
A and B paper sizes
ISO 216 defines the A series, where A4 is 210 × 297 mm. The B series (JIS B5 is 182 × 257 mm) is common in Japan for notebooks and books. US Letter is 215.9 × 279.4 mm.
FAQ
The printed cells are the wrong size. Why?
If the print dialog is set to “fit to page” or “shrink to fit”, the whole sheet is scaled and the cell size changes. Set the scale to 100% (actual size) before printing.
Can I match common notebook sizes such as 5 mm grid or 7 mm ruling?
Yes. Enter 5 or 7 under “Cell / line spacing (mm)”. You can use steps of 0.5 mm, from 2 up to 50 mm.
The edges of the sheet get cut off when printing.
Every printer has an unprintable border that varies by model. Set the margin to about 5–10 mm so the lines are not clipped at the edges.
Does the boxed manuscript type give me a 400-character sheet?
It draws a bordered grid that fits as many whole cells as the paper allows, so it is not an exact copy of a 20×20 Japanese manuscript sheet.
