Vertical Text Converter (Japanese Tategaki with Preview)

Convert horizontal Japanese text into vertical text you can paste straight into X (Twitter), Instagram and other apps. Punctuation, the long vowel mark and brackets are swapped for their vertical forms, and the text is laid out one character per line or in right-to-left columns. The preview below shows how it looks when set vertically. To clean up character forms first, see the Unicode Normalizer.

Notes

  • Unicode vertical forms may not exist in every font, so some characters can show as blanks or boxes. Check how the post looks in the actual app before publishing.
  • One-per-line and column layouts can look uneven in non-monospaced environments or apps with wide line spacing.
  • The "Vertical preview" uses CSS vertical writing on your raw input, so it can differ from the converted text you copy.
  • The long vowel mark is replaced with a vertical bar (︱). Small kana positioning and tate-chu-yoko (horizontal digits inside vertical text) are not handled.

FAQ

Why do some characters show as boxes or break in my post?

Vertical punctuation and brackets are special Unicode vertical forms that many fonts do not include, so they can appear as blanks or boxes. If that happens, turn off the vertical forms option and keep the ordinary characters, one per line.

When should I use one character per line versus columns?

One character per line suits a single vertical sentence; line breaks become blank lines. Columns lays multi-line text out right to left like real tategaki and pads gaps with full-width spaces, but columns can look misaligned depending on the font and app.

What happens to half-width letters, digits and symbols?

By default they are converted to full-width, along with spaces, before being stacked. Half-width characters have uneven widths and tend to misalign columns. Uncheck the full-width option to keep them as typed.

Why does the preview look different from the converted text?

The preview uses browser CSS vertical writing on your raw input. The text you copy swaps in vertical forms and puts each character on its own line, so the two can look different.
