Anagram & Palindrome Checker
Find out whether two words are made of the same letters (an anagram) or whether a phrase reads the same backward and forward (a palindrome). Before comparing, you can choose to ignore case, spaces, punctuation and Japanese kana differences. To count characters in a text, try the Character Counter.

Notes
- Characters are counted by code point. Rare kanji and emoji count as one character, but emoji built from several code points are split.
- With "Ignore punctuation and symbols" on, emoji and other symbols are ignored too. The long vowel mark "ー" is not removed as a symbol; use its own option.
- With "Ignore dakuten and handakuten marks" on, voiced kana are compared as unvoiced ones (が as か, ぱ as は), which suits loose word games.
- Kanji readings are not considered. To compare by reading, enter the text in hiragana.
Glossary
Anagram
A word game where the letters of one word or phrase are rearranged into another. "Listen" and "Silent" qualify because they use the same letters the same number of times.
Palindrome
A word or phrase that reads the same backward and forward, such as "level". Spaces and punctuation are usually ignored when comparing.
NFKC normalization
A Unicode step that folds compatibility characters into ordinary ones, for example full-width "A" into "A" and half-width katakana "ガ" into "ガ".
FAQ
Can I check anagrams while ignoring spaces and punctuation?
Yes. "Ignore spaces" and "Ignore punctuation and symbols" are on by default, so pairs like "Dormitory" and "Dirty room" match. Uncheck them if you want an exact comparison.
Can katakana and hiragana be treated as the same letters?
Yes. With "Treat katakana and hiragana as the same" on, "しんぶんし" and "ブンシシン" count as anagrams. To also compare words that differ only by dakuten marks, turn on "Ignore dakuten and handakuten marks".
If two words are not anagrams, can I see what differs?
Yes. The tool lists the letters that appear more often in A and those that appear more often in B, with counts, so you can see which letters to add or remove.
How is the long vowel mark "ー" handled?
By default it is compared as a normal character, so "ラーメン" can be rearranged along with its mark. To compare by sound only, turn on "Ignore the long vowel mark".
