Notes
- A Markdown table needs a header row. If you turn off "Use the first row as header", an empty header row is added.
- A "|" inside a cell becomes "\|", and a line break inside a cell becomes "<br>".
- Rows with fewer columns are filled with empty cells. Blank lines are ignored.
- "Auto-detect" treats the input as TSV if the first line contains a tab, and as comma-separated otherwise.
- When padding columns, full-width characters count as two columns wide. The result may look slightly off in some fonts.
Glossary
CSV / TSV
Plain-text table formats that separate fields with commas (CSV) or tabs (TSV). A table copied from Excel or Google Sheets is usually TSV.
Markdown table
A table written with "|" between columns and a "---" line under the header row. Many services such as GitHub render it as a table.
GFM
GitHub Flavored Markdown, an extension of Markdown that adds tables, task lists and more.
FAQ
Can I turn a table copied from Excel into a Markdown table?
Yes. Copy the range in Excel and paste it into the input box; it is detected as tab-separated (TSV) automatically. If the delimiter is guessed wrong, pick it manually from the dropdown.
What happens to "|" or line breaks inside a cell?
To keep the Markdown table intact, "|" is written as "\|" and a line break inside a cell becomes "<br>".
Can I convert CSV that has no header row?
Turn off "Use the first row as header" and an empty header row is added. Markdown tables require a header row, so this is the form the output takes.
Columns look misaligned when the table contains Japanese.
Padding counts full-width characters as two columns wide, but the real width depends on the font. This only affects how the raw text looks; the rendered table is unaffected. Turn off "Pad columns to equal width" if it bothers you.
