Notes
- Each premium pay category is calculated independently. If the same hours fall into more than one category (for example, overtime hours that are also late-night hours), split the hours between categories or enter a combined premium rate for the overlapping hours yourself.
- The displayed premium rates (25% / 35% / 50%) are the statutory minimums under Japan's Labor Standards Act. Actual pay may differ depending on a company's work rules or employment contract.
- Annual wage is simply the monthly wage multiplied by 12, and does not include bonuses or allowances.
- This tool provides a rough simulation only and cannot be used as a basis for actual payroll, tax, or labor procedures.
Glossary
Premium pay (wariwashi chingin)
Under Japan's Labor Standards Act, employers must pay a premium on top of the regular wage for statutory overtime, holiday work, and late-night work. The minimum premium rate is set by law for each category, though a company's work rules can set a higher rate.
Statutory overtime and the 60-hour rule
Work beyond 8 hours a day or 40 hours a week (the statutory working hours) requires a premium of at least 25%. For the portion of monthly overtime that exceeds 60 hours, the premium rises to at least 50%. This 60-hour rule used to apply only to large companies, but has applied to small and medium-sized businesses as well since April 2023.
Statutory holiday work
Work performed on a statutory holiday — at least one day off per week, guaranteed by law — requires a premium of at least 35%. Work on a company's own non-statutory days off is instead treated as overtime (at least 25%) depending on weekly hours, and is distinct from statutory holiday work.
Late-night work
Work performed between 10 PM and 5 AM requires a premium of at least 25%. When late-night work overlaps with overtime or holiday work, the premium rates are added together (for example, late-night overtime is at least 25% + 25% = 50%).
FAQ
What overtime premium rates are used?
The defaults are the statutory minimums under Japan's Labor Standards Act: 25% for overtime, 50% for overtime beyond 60 hours a month, 35% for work on legal holidays and 25% for late-night work. Actual pay may differ under your employment contract.
Does annual income include bonuses?
No. Annual income is simply the monthly pay multiplied by 12, excluding bonuses and allowances.
How are hourly, daily and monthly pay converted?
Enter any one of hourly, daily, monthly or annual pay, plus hours per day and days per month, and the rest are derived. Employers calculate this differently, so use the result as a guide, not as an official basis.
