Seating Chart Randomizer & Order Shuffler

Enter one name per line, choose the number of rows and columns, and get a randomized seating chart. You can pin some people to fixed seats and keep certain pairs from sitting near each other. Switch to “Speaking order” for a numbered random order. To split people into groups, use the Team Splitter; for assigning outcomes, try the Amidakuji Generator.

What to make

One per line as “Name@row,column”. Row 1 is the front of the room.

One pair per line as “Name,Name”.

How to use

  1. Choose “Seating chart” or “Speaking order” and enter one name per line.
  2. For a seating chart, set the rows and columns, and add fixed seats or pairs to keep apart if needed.
  3. Press “Shuffle”. The result changes every time you press it.
  4. Use “Copy result” to paste it as text.

Notes

  • Up to 100 names and a 10 × 10 chart. If two people share a name, tell them apart (e.g. “Sam A”, “Sam B”); duplicates are fine in speaking order.
  • Row 1 of the chart is the front of the room. When there are more seats than people, the empty seats are placed at random too.
  • Pin people with “Name@row,column” (e.g. Alice@1,1); if a name contains “@”, the last one is the separator. Pairs use “Name,Name”, so names cannot contain commas.
  • “Apart” means not directly next to each other (left, right, front or back). Turn on the diagonal option to include diagonals. The tool retries up to 5,000 times and shows an error if no arrangement works.
  • Randomness comes from the browser’s crypto.getRandomValues. Your list is processed only on this page and is never sent or stored.

Glossary

Fixed seat

A seat that a person always gets, excluded from the shuffle. Useful, for example, for someone who needs to sit at the front.

Keep apart

A pair who should not sit near each other. The tool reshuffles until the pair is separated.

FAQ

Which side of the chart is the front of the room?

Row 1, at the top of the chart, is the front of the room, and a “Front of the room” label is shown above it. Row numbers in fixed seats are counted from the top as well.

Can I keep certain people in the same seat?

Add them under “Fixed seats”, one per line as “Name@row,column” (e.g. Alice@1,1). Pinned people are not shuffled, and everyone else is placed randomly in the remaining seats.

What if the “keep apart” pairs cannot be satisfied?

It can happen when there are few seats or fixed seats are already too close. The tool retries up to 5,000 times and then shows an error; remove some conditions or add seats. “Apart” means not directly next to each other, and diagonals can be included with the option.

What happens when there are more seats than people?

The extra seats are shown as empty, and where they fall is random too. If there are fewer seats than people, an error is shown.

What if two people have the same name?

In a seating chart, fixed seats and pairs are matched by name, so duplicates are rejected. Make them unique, e.g. “Sam A” and “Sam B”. Speaking order accepts duplicates.
