Notes
- Nine Star Ki results are for fortune-telling and entertainment only. Make important life decisions on your own judgment.
- The Kyusei year changes at Risshun, which falls on February 3, 4 or 5 depending on the year. Anyone born from January 1 to the day before Risshun gets the previous year's star.
- The tool works by date: on the day of Risshun or another solar-term start, the new year or month is counted from that day. If you were born on such a day, the exact time may put you in the previous year or month.
- The month star changes on the first day of each solar month (Shokan, Risshun, Keichitsu and so on), starting from the Tiger month at Risshun, using the standard rule by year star. Some schools divide or calculate months differently.
- Risshun and the solar-term days are calculated from the Sun's ecliptic longitude in Japan Standard Time. The supported range is the years 1900 to 2100.
Glossary
Year star (Honmei-sei)
Your basic Nine Star Ki number, set by your birth year counted from Risshun. There are nine stars, from 1 White Water to 9 Purple Fire, and the star goes down by one each year, completing a cycle in nine years.
Month star (Getsumei-sei)
The star for your birth month, counted from the solar-term start of each month. It is read together with the year star for a finer picture of temperament. The star of the Tiger month depends on which group your year star belongs to.
Solar term start (Setsu-iri) and Risshun
Of the 24 solar terms, the ones that begin a month (Shokan, Risshun, Keichitsu and so on) are called "setsu", and the day the Sun enters one is its start. Risshun begins the Tiger month and marks the new year in Nine Star Ki and zodiac fortune-telling.
Five elements (Gogyo)
A way of sorting everything into Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water. Each of the nine stars has an element (for example, 1 is Water and 9 is Fire), and 2, 5 and 8 are all Earth.
FAQ
Do people born in January or February get the previous year?
Yes. In Nine Star Ki the year changes at Risshun (February 3-5), so anyone born from January 1 to the day before Risshun gets the previous year's star. For example, February 3, 2024 gives the 2023 star (4 Green Wood), while February 4, 2024 gives the 2024 star (3 Jade Wood).
Is Risshun always on February 4?
No. Risshun is the day the Sun reaches ecliptic longitude 315 degrees, and it falls on February 3, 4 or 5 depending on the year. It was February 3 in 2021 and 2025, and February 4 in 2022, 2024 and 2026. The tool calculates it for each year and shows it in the result.
What if I was born on the day of Risshun?
The tool works by date, so the day of Risshun counts as the new year. Strictly, a birth before the exact time of Risshun belongs to the previous year, so check the time on a calendar if you were born that day. The same applies to the start day of a solar month for the month star.
How is the month star decided?
Months change on the first day of each solar term month (Risshun, Keichitsu, Seimei and so on), with the Tiger month starting at Risshun. The Tiger month star depends on your year star group (1, 4, 7 gives 8; 3, 6, 9 gives 2; 2, 5, 8 gives 5), and it goes down by one each month.
Does it show lucky directions or compatibility?
No. This tool is limited to the year star, month star, element, a short description, and the year-to-star chart. Lucky directions and compatibility vary by school, so they are not included. Results are for fortune-telling and entertainment only.
