2048 – Merge Tiles to Reach 2048
The classic number puzzle: slide the tiles so equal numbers merge, and try to build the 2048 tile. Swipe on a phone or use the arrow keys (or WASD) on a computer. Choose a 4×4, 5×5 or 6×6 board; you also get a one-move undo and a best score for each size. Looking for another puzzle? Try the Sliding Puzzle.

How to use
- Choose a board size (4×4, 5×5 or 6×6). A new game starts as soon as you pick one.
- Slide all tiles up, down, left or right with the arrow keys (or WASD), by swiping on the board, or with the on-screen arrow buttons. Equal tiles merge into one and the merged value is added to your score.
- After each move a new tile (2 or 4) appears in an empty cell. Making the 2048 tile wins, but you can keep playing for a higher score.
- Press "Undo" to take back your last move once. The game ends when no move is possible. Press "New game" to start over.
Notes
- Everything runs in your browser and nothing is sent to a server.
- A new tile appears in a random empty cell: a 2 with 90% probability and a 4 with 10%.
- "Undo" takes back only the last move; you cannot undo several moves in a row. Undoing does not lower your best score.
- After you make 2048 you can keep going until no move is possible; tiles continue to 4096, 8192 and beyond.
- Best records (highest score and largest tile) are stored per board size in this browser’s local storage. They are not carried over if you clear site data or switch browsers or devices.
- Game progress is not saved. Reloading the page starts a new game. On touch screens the page does not scroll while you swipe on the board.
Glossary
2048
A sliding number puzzle in which equal tiles merge into their sum when you move. The usual goal is to create the 2048 tile before the board fills up.
Swipe
Dragging a finger across a touch screen. Here, all tiles move in the direction you swipe on the board. Very short movements are ignored so that taps are not mistaken for swipes.
FAQ
Does the game end when I make 2048?
No. A message appears when you create the 2048 tile, but you can keep playing. Tiles continue to 4096, 8192 and beyond, and the game ends only when no move is possible.
When is it game over?
When every cell is filled and no two equal tiles are adjacent horizontally or vertically. In that state no direction changes the board, so the game ends.
Are the new tiles random?
Yes. Every time a move changes the board, one tile appears in a random empty cell: a 2 with 90% probability, a 4 with 10%. A move that changes nothing does not add a tile.
I cannot scroll the page on my phone when touching the board
Swipes on the board are used to move the tiles, so the page does not scroll there. Swipe on the area outside the board (the margins or headings) to scroll.
Are best records separate for 4×4, 5×5 and 6×6?
Yes. The highest score and largest tile are saved separately for each board size in this browser’s local storage. "Reset records" clears them.
