Notes
- The zodiac animal is determined by the calendar year (January 1 to December 31). In the traditional Chinese calendar the animal changes at Lunar New Year, and in some Japanese fortune-telling at Risshun (around February 4), so people born in January or February may be assigned the previous year's animal there.
- Star signs use the commonly published date ranges (for example, Aries is March 21 to April 19). The cut-off days can differ by a day depending on the year and the source.
- The birthstone and birth flower shown are one representative per month. Lists vary by country, jewelry association, and book. The meanings shown are common ones and also differ by source.
- Age is calculated as of today, increasing on the birthday itself.
- The supported range is year 1 through 9999 in the Gregorian calendar.
Glossary
Sexagenary cycle (Jikkan Junishi)
A 60-year cycle made by pairing the 10 heavenly stems with the 12 earthly branches (the zodiac animals). It starts with Wood Rat (Kinoe-ne, 甲子) and returns after 60 years, which is why the 60th birthday (Kanreki) is celebrated in Japan. The index is (year − 4) mod 60.
Year man / year woman (Toshi-otoko, Toshi-onna)
A person whose birth-year zodiac animal matches the animal of the current year. It happens every 12 years, around the ages of 12, 24, 36 and so on, and is considered a lucky or special year in Japan, for example at Setsubun bean-throwing and New Year shrine visits.
Birthstone
A gemstone assigned to each birth month, traditionally believed to bring good luck. The modern list traces back to a 1912 US jewelers' association list, and Japan's widely used list was set by the national jewelry wholesalers' association in 1958.
FAQ
Is the zodiac animal for January or February births the previous year's animal?
This tool uses the calendar year (January 1 to December 31), so a January birthday gets the animal of the birth year. Some traditions, such as the Chinese lunar calendar or Risshun-based Japanese fortune-telling (around February 4), switch animals later, in which case people born in January or early February would belong to the previous animal.
What if I was born on the cusp of two star signs?
The result uses the widely published date ranges (for example, Aries is March 21 to April 19). The exact moment the Sun crosses a sign boundary shifts from year to year, so cusp dates can differ by a day between sources. For a precise answer, use an astrology chart that includes your birth time.
Are the birth flower and birthstone per day or per month?
Both are shown per month. Daily birth flowers (366 of them) differ greatly between books and websites, so this tool shows a commonly cited flower for the month instead, along with one representative birthstone.
What is a "year man" or "year woman" year in Japan?
It is a year whose zodiac animal matches the animal of your birth year. This repeats every 12 years, around ages 12, 24, 36, and so on. The tool tells you whether this year is one and shows the next such year and the age you will reach.
