GPA Calculator (4.0 / 4.3 / Japanese University Scale)

Enter the credits and grade for each course to get your credit-weighted GPA. Switch between a 4.0 scale, a 4.0 scale with plus and minus grades, a 4.3 scale, and the S/A/B/C/D grades used by many Japanese universities. Nothing you enter leaves your device or is stored. Notes

  • The mapping from grades to points differs between schools, departments and countries. The scales shown are common examples only. Check your institution’s rules and official transcript for the real figure.
  • Courses you failed (F or fail) still count in the GPA denominator (graded credits), even though they earn no credits. How retaken courses are handled also varies, so adjust the rows if needed.
  • Rows with 0 credits and rows with nothing entered are ignored. Rows with no grade selected are also left out of the GPA; the count is shown under the result.
  • For pass/fail courses (such as P/NP) or courses without a grade, leave the grade unselected or remove the row.
  • GPA is the credit-weighted average, rounded to two decimal places.
  • Everything you type is processed in this browser only and is never sent to a server.

Glossary

GPA (grade point average)

Each course grade is converted to grade points (for example A = 3.0), weighted by credits, and averaged: sum of (credits × grade points) divided by sum of credits. It is used in scholarship, study-abroad and graduate admission criteria.

Grade points

The numeric value attached to a grade such as S, A or B. Many schools use a 4.0 maximum, but 4.3 and 4.5 maximums and plus/minus grades also exist.

Graded credits vs. earned credits

Graded credits form the denominator of the GPA and include failed courses. Earned credits count toward graduation and exclude failed courses.

FAQ

How is GPA calculated?

Each grade is converted to grade points and multiplied by the course credits. The products are summed and divided by the total graded credits. For example, a 2-credit A (3.0) and a 4-credit B (2.0) give (2×3.0 + 4×2.0) ÷ 6 = 2.33. The result is rounded to two decimals.

Do failed courses count toward the GPA?

Yes. A fail or F counts as 0 grade points and its credits stay in the denominator. It does not count toward earned credits, though. Some schools replace the grade when a course is retaken; if yours does, edit the row accordingly.

My school uses different point values. What should I do?

Schools differ on whether S is 4.0 or 4.5, whether A+ is separate, and so on. The scales here are common examples. If none matches exactly, use the closest one as an estimate and check your institution’s rules and transcript for the official figure.

What is the difference between the 4.0 and 4.3 scales?

On a 4.0 scale both A+ and A are capped at 4.0. On a 4.3 scale only A+ is worth 4.3, and the other grades match the 4.0 scale with plus/minus. The 4.0 scale is the most common overseas, while some schools and countries use 4.3 or 4.5.

How do I enter pass/fail courses or courses with no grade?

Leave the grade as "Not selected" or remove the row. Rows with no grade are left out of the GPA, and the number of skipped courses and credits is shown under the result.
