Split by

How to use

  1. Type or paste the names into the list, one per line.
  2. Under "Split by", choose number of teams or people per team and enter a number.
  3. Press "Split into teams" to see the result. Press "Shuffle again" as often as you like.
  4. Use "Copy result" to copy each team’s members as plain text.

Notes

  • Names are shuffled with your browser’s cryptographic generator (crypto.getRandomValues), without bias.
  • When the names do not divide evenly, the leftovers are spread one per team, so team sizes differ by at most one. With "People per team", the number is a target and the team count is rounded up (for example, 10 people at 3 per team gives four teams of 3, 3, 2 and 2).
  • Up to 200 names and 100 teams are supported. Duplicate names on separate lines are treated as separate people.
  • Constraints such as keeping certain people together or apart are not supported.
  • A name list can contain personal data, so it is processed only in your browser and never sent to a server.

FAQ

What happens when the names do not divide evenly?

The leftovers are spread one per team. Splitting 10 people into 3 teams gives 4, 3 and 3, so sizes differ by at most one. Which teams get the extra person is random too.

Why does "People per team" sometimes give smaller teams than I entered?

The team count is the number of names divided by your size, rounded up, and everyone is then spread as evenly as possible. Ten people at 3 per team become four teams of 3, 3, 2 and 2, which avoids leaving one person alone in a tiny team.

How are duplicate names handled?

Each line counts as a separate person, even when two lines are identical. To tell people with the same name apart, write them differently, such as "Sam A" and "Sam B".

Can I keep two people together or apart?

No, the split is fully random and has no constraints. If you need a particular condition, press "Shuffle again" until the result meets it.

Is my name list sent anywhere?

No. Shuffling and display all happen in your browser, and the list is never sent to a server.
