Tokushoho Notice Generator (Japan Commercial Transactions Act)

If you sell goods or services online to customers in Japan, the Act on Specified Commercial Transactions requires a legal disclosure page, usually titled 特定商取引法に基づく表記 (tokushoho). Enter the seller, representative, address, phone, email, prices, extra fees, payment methods and timing, delivery timing and return policy, and get a Japanese-language draft as text, Markdown or HTML. The output is always in Japanese, because the notice is shown to Japanese consumers. Related: Meta Tag & OGP Generator.

    How to use

    1. Fill in each item, from the seller to the return policy, with your shop details (write in Japanese, since the notice is for Japanese customers).
    2. If you are a sole proprietor and do not want to publish your address or phone number, tick "Withhold the address and disclose on request" and "Withhold the phone number and disclose on request".
    3. Use "Insert sample text" to drop in an example for fees or returns, then rewrite it to match your terms.
    4. Fix anything listed under the checks, choose an "Output format", then press "Copy" or "Download".

    Notes

    • The output is a general template, not legal advice. What you must disclose varies with the goods or services and the way you sell. You are responsible for checking the final text.
    • Replace every ○○ and example in the sample text with your own terms. Do not publish it as is.
    • A sole proprietor may withhold the address and phone number only if they can actually disclose them without delay on request. Make sure you have a channel, such as email, to handle such requests.
    • Depending on what you sell (physical goods, digital content, services, subscriptions), further items such as a purchase deadline, system requirements or subscription terms may be needed. Add them under "Additional items".
    • There is no statutory cooling-off period for online sales in Japan, but if you do not state your return terms, the buyer may generally return goods within 8 days of receipt at their own cost. State your own terms if you want something different.
    • Laws and guidance can change, so check the latest information from the Consumer Affairs Agency before publishing. Your input is processed only in your browser and is never sent to a server.

    Glossary

    Tokushoho notice (特定商取引法に基づく表記)

The disclosure that online sellers in Japan must show in ads and on sales pages: seller name, address, prices, payment methods, return terms and so on. It is usually a dedicated page linked from the site footer.

    Disclosure on request

A statement that the address or phone number will be provided promptly when a consumer asks, used instead of printing them on the page. The seller must really be able to respond.

    Person responsible for operations (運営責任者)

The person accountable for running the site. For a company, the name of the representative or officer in charge.

    FAQ

    Who needs a tokushoho notice?

Businesses that sell goods, rights or services to consumers in Japan by mail order, including online sales, must show certain items in their advertising. Handmade goods sold by individuals and digital content can count too. This tool cannot tell you whether you are covered, so check the Consumer Affairs Agency guidance.

Can a sole proprietor leave out a home address and phone number?

Practice allows the address and phone number to be left off the page if the notice says they will be disclosed without delay on request, and the seller can actually do so. The checkboxes output that standard wording, but you must confirm the conditions and the contact channel (such as email) yourself.

If I do not state a return policy, are returns impossible?

No. Online sales in Japan have no cooling-off period, but if you do not state your return terms, the buyer can generally return the goods within 8 days of receipt at their own cost. If you do not accept returns, say so clearly on the page.

Is the generated text ready to publish as is?

No. It is a general template, not legal advice. Replace every ○○ and sample sentence with your own terms, and check whether your business needs more items, such as for subscriptions or digital content, before you publish.

Why is the output in Japanese even on the English page?

The notice is read by Japanese consumers, so it should be written in Japanese for sales aimed at Japan. The English page only explains the form, so type your entries in Japanese.
