Avatar Generator: Initials and Identicon Icons

Create a letter avatar from a name, or a GitHub-style identicon that always comes out the same for the same text, and save it as a PNG. It works well for default profile pictures on social media, forums and chat apps. Everything runs in your browser and the text you type is never uploaded. To crop a photo into a circle instead, use the Round Image Cropper.

How to use

  1. Choose "Initials" or "Identicon (pattern)" under "Type".
  2. Enter "Name (to make initials from)" or "Seed text (same text, same pattern)".
  3. Pick a "Shape" and an "Output size". To change colors, turn off "Pick colors automatically from the text" and choose "Background color" and "Text / pattern color".
  4. Click "Download PNG" to save it.

Notes

  • Initials use the first letters of the first and last word when the name has several words, or the leading letters of a single word.
  • An identicon is derived from the text, so the same text gives the same pattern and color on any device. Even if you type an email address, it is never sent anywhere.
  • Any shape other than Square gives a PNG with transparent corners.
  • Fonts come from your device, so letter shapes may differ slightly between systems.

Glossary

Identicon

A symmetric geometric icon generated automatically from a string. GitHub and similar sites assign them to users without a profile picture.

Seed

The starting value for a random or generated result. The same seed always produces the same output.

Initials

The first letters of a name. Letter avatars commonly use the first letters of the given and family names.

FAQ

What is an identicon, and is the pattern the same for the same text?

It is a symmetric 5x5 pattern icon generated from a string. The pattern and color are computed from the text, so the same text always gives the same result on any device, on any day.

How are initials made from a name?

With several words, such as "Ada Lovelace", it uses the first letters of the first and last word ("AL"). With a single word, it takes the leading letters, one or two depending on "Letters". Letters are uppercased.

Will the pattern match the GitHub identicon for the same name?

No. It follows the same symmetric idea as GitHub identicons, but the algorithm differs, so the same text gives a different pattern. Use it for your own icons.

Is the background transparent for circle or rounded shapes?

Yes. With "Circle" or "Rounded", the PNG has transparent corners outside the shape. "Square" fills the whole image with color.

Is the name or email I type sent anywhere?

No. The pattern is calculated and the image is exported entirely in your browser, and what you type is never sent out.
