Notes
- The QR code contains the password as plain text. Anyone who scans it can join your network, so be careful where you print, post or share it.
- The characters \ ; , : and " in the SSID or password are escaped automatically so scanners read them correctly.
- Scanning support varies by device and app. After generating, test that a real phone can connect.
- QR Code is a registered trademark of DENSO WAVE INCORPORATED in Japan and in other countries.
Glossary
SSID
The name of a Wi-Fi network. You can find it in the router settings or on its label.
WPA / WEP
Wi-Fi encryption standards. WEP is outdated and weak, so use WPA2 or WPA3 whenever you can.
Hidden SSID
A setting where the network name is not broadcast. Devices must be told the SSID directly, and the QR code carries a flag for that.
FAQ
Which phones can scan a Wi-Fi QR code?
The built-in camera on iPhones (iOS 11 and later) and on Android 10 and later, as well as Google Lens, can scan it and join the network. Older devices or some apps may not support it, so test before you share it.
I don't know my security type. Which should I pick?
Most modern routers use WPA2 or WPA3, so choose "WPA / WPA2 / WPA3". Pick "None (open network)" for networks without a password. Choose WEP only if your router is set to the old WEP mode.
Can my password contain characters like ; or :?
Yes. Backslash, semicolon, comma, colon and double quote have special meaning in the QR format, so the tool escapes them with a backslash automatically. Just type your password as it is.
Is it safe to let others see the generated QR code?
The password is stored in the code as plain text, so anyone who scans it can join your network. Consider a separate guest network and limit where the code is displayed.
